Gory Goodness: Dawn of the Dead

I was and I still am a fan of the original Dawn of the Dead I had it on a tapped VHS for years as a kid and it was a movie that me and my buddies would watch all the time when we would have our horror movie sleep over’s.

Anyway today I am not talking about the classic Dawn of the Dead that was released back in 1978. The original Dawn of the Dead was one of my favourites and it does have huge nostalgic memories for me, but for me this remake is better in pretty much every way.

Now many times when a beloved movie is remade it is not quite as good as the original, but I really do think this is an exception.

So the story is this. A zombie outbreak has occurred. We never really find out exactly where it came from, but to be honest that really is not the point of the movie. This is a movie that is all about survival and I think that it is one of the best zombie movies of the last twenty years.

We have a good group of survivors including the always bad ass Ving Rhames. Anyway as I am sure most people know they hide out in a mall. They seem to actually be somewhat adapting to life inside the mall. They also have a friend (Andy) who owns a gun store that is right across from the mall. They communicate with him by way of binoculars and white boards with markers. This proves to be a fatal friendship.

You see the guy who own the gun store has no food. So the survivors in the mall make a plan to use a dog to take food over to him and a walkie talkie. This is a great plan in theory as dogs are of no interest to zombies. The dog gets over there and Andy lets him in, but a zombie also gets in. There is a scuffle and Andy is bitten. This is where the movie really turns. One of the survivors tries to get over to the gun store. Not to get guns or save Andy, but to make sure her damn dog is ok. This stupid woman pretty much signed the death warrant for the rest of the survivors.

This leads to a series of events that result in the mall getting over run by zombies. They have to evacuate and evacuate really fast. Luckily they have been working on this sweet van while in the mall. But this whole sequence is done really well. For moments when they are living in the mall you almost forget how dangerous things are outside. And then it just hits them like a ton of bricks. They leave the mall and try to make it to a boat where hopefully there will be an island not full of zombies.

If you love zombie movies I would assume that you have already seen this. If not you must watch it. Do not be put of because it is juts a remake. I love the original, but I would rather watch this one any day of the week.

This movie is absolutely incredible. It just lie he title says scared the hell out of me. What made this movie so terrifying is that the zombies chased, sprinted after you. This made them so scary there was literally no way of escaping them. All the characters were great and each death was horrifying. The scariest part for me was the end when they get to the island and find out that they are in fact doomed. This movie was great in so many ways I wish they made more zombies like this one.

This movie got me into the new zombie craze. What i loved most about this movie was the special features on how they made the zombies and the gore. If you haven’t seen it, you should it’s great, the only bad thing is that it kind of takes away the scares of the movie. Now when I watch it I get excited when I see a zombie or gory kill because I always say “Hey I know how they did that”.
